» Morris Kaplan | Chairman/CEO
morrisMorris Kaplan grew up in the residential real estate business. Following in his father’s footsteps, Morris became a partner and then President of Kaplan Companies in 1975. Together with his brother Michael, the two guided the Company to become one of the largest real estate developers in New Jersey.

During his tenure at Kaplan Companies, the Company developed residential and commercial real estate valuing more than $1.5 billion. In addition Morris expanded the Company with three additional divisions:
  • Kaplan Building Systems: a modular manufacturing company that supplied pre-finished modular homes in the Northeast as well as modular commercial buildings for companies such as Marriott.
  • Kaplan Urban Redevelopment Group: focusing on urban infill projects in New Jersey, New York City and Atlanta.
  • Kaplan Commercial Group: the general contracting group for Kaplan Company projects as well as fee-based construction management for third parties.
Morris’ expertise lies in financial oversight, management of design projects, and supervising construction. He holds a BSCE from Rutgers University and was the president of his Civil Engineering Class. Mr. Kaplan has been actively involved with the Central Jersey Building Association and was the Chairman of the Political Action Committee for the New Jersey Builders Association. Morris was also a board member of the start-up de Nova Community Bank in New Jersey.
» Nathan Kaplan | Partner
nathanNathan joined Kaplan Residential in 2011 and is responsible for Acquisitions, Site Sourcing, Development Coordination, and Asset Management. He also plays a key role in keeping everyone happy in the office by playing loud country music on the Bose Soundlink and decking everyone out with his hometown Baltimore Ravens SWAG.

Shortly after Nathan received his Finance and Real Estate degree from Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business, he joined his father shortly after Morris had left Kaplan Companies, and they turned Morris J Kaplan Communities into Kaplan Residential. Being raised in a real estate family and playing with his cousins in empty homes and on construction sites, Real Estate was a natural passion. For Nathan, it was a special opportunity to develop a closer relationship with his Father and grow in an industry that his family has tremendous experience in.

When he is not busy forcing everyone to wear Ravens jerseys in the office, Nathan is actively involved in the Atlanta Community. He has been volunteering with the Friendship Circle, a special needs Organization. Since moving to Atlanta he has helped with awareness and fundraising. Most importantly, he enjoys participating in the bi-weekly events with the Special Needs. Nathan is also involved with Chabad Intown. Together with Rabbi Schusterman, they are building the new Chabad building that will front the Beltline just south of Ponce City Market in Atlanta.
» Kevin Watson | CFO/VP of Operations
kevinKevin joined Kaplan Residential in 2006 and is responsible for coordinating all financial matters including reporting, tax filings, audits, lender relations, and oversight of JV partnerships while also playing an integral role in acquisitions, development planning, and day to day operations.

Prior to joining Kaplan Residential Kevin was the CFO and Managing Broker for an Atlanta based homebuilder constructing single family homes and townhomes in which Kevin’s financial leadership was a catalyst for building the company from start-up to 80 million in revenues over a four year period. Kevin spent eight years as Controller and Managing Broker for the Atlanta division of Highland Homes. Highland Homes ranks as the 21st largest homebuilder in the U.S. In total, Kevin played a lead role in the land development, construction, and sales of over 4,500 single family homes and townhomes in the Atlanta area and over 500 condominium units, single family homes throughout the state of Florida. Kevin was responsible for the onsite construction management and sales for two student condominium conversions at Florida State University.

He began his career as an acquisition analyst for a Bethesda, MD based investment firm which syndicated over 100 multi-family properties, shopping centers, office buildings, and hotels. He holds a BBA in Finance from the University of Georgia and an MBA with a concentration in real estate development from Nova Southeastern University. Kevin is a licensed Florida Real Estate Broker and Licensed Florida Certified Building Contractor, as well as a member of the Institute of Management Accountants and the Urban Land Institute.
» John M. Balchus | VP of Development
jackJack brings more than 35 years of senior management experience in real estate development and construction. Throughout his career he has worked with acquisition, design and construction teams involved in the development of more than one-million square feet of office and industrial space, as well as 20,000 residential units ranging from single family to townhomes, apartments and condominium. In addition he has helped develop retail shopping centers, hotels, historic renovations, and senior housing communities. Jack has also worked with municipal and civic organizations on the design and construction of specialty work force housing and housing for families in distress, an experience he found particularly rewarding.

In addition to his work with Kaplan Residential, Jack has overseen development for: Cosmopolitan Condominiums, Atlanta, GA; Park Row Townhomes, Atlanta, GA; 930 NoMo, a student housing property in Charleston, SC; Carlton Club, Palm Beach, FL; Victoria Park, a townhome community, Fort Lauderdale, FL; Inland Ryerson Building Systems, a division of Inland Steel; Sun Trust Bank; Oxford Construction Services, Orlando, FL; and CED construction, a large national developer of apartment and senior housing communities throughout the Southeast.
» Scott W. Hawley | Managing Director
jackScott W. Hawley is the Managing Director for Kaplan Residential Atlanta. He is responsible for executing the strategy of the firm and supporting its leadership team. Prior to joining Kaplan Residential, Scott W. Hawley was responsible for the execution of Greystar's client facing strategy in the Southeast where he supported the development and acquisition efforts of 70+ clients. In aggregate, these clients owned 52,000 apartments operated by Greystar's Southeast Region valued in excess of $8 Billion.

Prior to joining Greystar, Mr. Hawley was the Executive Sales Director for National Accounts at CoreLogic SafeRent. He holds an MBA from Emory University, and he completed the University of Pennsylvania’s Dual Degree Program, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics from the Wharton School of Business and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in International Relations from the College of Arts and Sciences. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, Mr. Hawley spent four years on active duty in the United States Army as a platoon leader and a logistics officer. He is the co-author of Museums of Atlanta (Westholme Publishing 2006), and he has climbed all 54 of the 14,000 foot mountains in Colorado.
» Marcela Dib | Assistant
marcelaMarcela joined the Kaplan Residential team in 2014 as Assistant to Morris Kaplan, having the opportunity to be actively involved in different aspects of real estate development. She has been participating in the company’s projects due diligence, design, budgeting, closings, overseeing deliverables, and managing account payables. She is the one supporting the team when documents or reports are needed and keeping everything organized. She has a very positive attitude and is eager to keep learning and helping her team when needed.

She holds a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Management from Florida International University, and is currently in the process of getting her MS in Real Estate Development from Nova Southeastern University.
